We're in the middle of the nastiest, most jaw-dropping presidential election in our nation's history (IMO), and almost every time I read another political news story I find myself asking the same question that David After Dentist asked when he was still coming down off of the laughing gas: "Is this real life?"
A crass, arrogant, hateful real-estate-mogul-turned-reality-TV-star is now the Republican presidential frontrunner, and the Democrats are boasting a woman who is, at best, a professional liar, and at worse, well...a lot worse. Oh yeah, and there's a solid chance she will be indicted for the whole email server thing, which would make America look even more awesome, amiright?
In last night's 978th Fox News debate (seriously, has no one figured out that these debates are pointless yet?), the show opened with Donald Trump comparing the size of his massive hands to the size of his...er...not hands. His manhood. His penis.
That's right. In a presidential debate. He smugly talked about his penis.
I don't even let my boys talk about their penises at the dinner table, let alone on national television. Drumpf's mother has to be rolling over in her grave right about now, and I'm sure Melania is cringing and considering looking for a one-way ticket back to Slovenia.
People are freaking out. Many are fearful of what's to come for our country, and their voting based on their fear. Some are voting for socialism because there's a huge income divide in our country that has resulted in a bunch of people in need. Others are tired of the rhetoric and aren't voting at all.
We as a country are caught up in this political hurricane, and the storm is only getting worse. We're focused on the dark clouds and the strong winds and we're looking for shelter in a presidential candidate.
We can keep looking til the day we die, but we won't find a place to hide in Donald or Hillary.
Even the most perfect, unifying candidate imaginable couldn't provide a safe place for us.
True shelter, shelter for our souls, and the great hope in spite of our circumstances, only comes from a perfect, fully-present, all-knowing, always-kind, loving God. ONLY from Him.
He's seated on a throne that's without term limits, and there will never be competition for His position, power, and authority. He has always been and always will be, and nothing surprises Him. He will never, ever step down from His throne, and all of the other little guys, the Drumpfs and the Hillarys, are inconsequential in comparison to His sovereignty and His master plan. Daniel had this to say about God's God-ness:
“Blessed be the name of God forever and ever. He knows all, does all: He changes the seasons and guides history, He raises up kings and also brings them down, He provides both intelligence and discernment, He opens up the depths, tells secrets, sees in the dark—light spills out of him!"
Rest easy, my friends. God's good. He's unchanging. He's sovereign over all. He loves us.
